Come, gentle Spring! ethereal Mildness! come.

Spring Cleaning

March bustles in on windy feet
And sweeps my doorstep and my street.
She washes and cleans with pounding rains,
Scrubbing the earth of winter stains.
She shakes the grime from carpet green
Till naught but fresh new blades are seen.
Then, house in order, all neat as a pin,
She ushers gentle springtime in.

The windows in the Richardson home are open, flowers are on the window sill, and spring cleaning is in full swing. Spring has always been my favorite time of the year. Of course, I always best see God's extravagence and love of beauty in his flowers. But I also see this season as a time to embrace simplicity and gratitude as I pare down the closets and take inventory of what I have been blessed with. So as spring cleaning gets underway at our home, I thought I would share some of my favorite new cleaning finds! Enjoy and happy spring.

Method Good for Wood: This microfiber cloth works just like my swiffer cloths used to, only it doesn't go in the trash after each use. Gets my knick-knacks spiffy without messy spray and can be thrown in the washer....love it! Method products can be found at Target and the microfiber cloth is around $5.00

Shaklee Basic H: I got a bottle of this all-purpose cleaner as a wedding gift...4 years ago. And I still have half of it left. A 16 oz. of this concentrated solution comes out to only $.25 per gallon...what! I use it all the time in the kitchen because I can rest assured that it is totally non-toxic...I think I could drink it and be fine...not that it sounds like a good time but I could. Shaklee is sold through independent consultants.

Method Daily Shower Cleaner: I HATE cleaning the bathtub. HATE. Actually I possess a strong dislike for any type of activity that requires me to spend most of the time upside down. Add scrubbing and I'm done. So I like that fact that I use this every day and my shower stays squeaky clean (and I stay upright). I have tried using other cleaners but I felt like I was in a fumigation tent, breathing in death. This is non-toxic and comes in larger refill bottles...good for me and better for the earth. Once again, method products can be found at Target.

Clorox Green Works Natural Toilet Cleaner: According to the label, this cleaner is made with all plant-derived ingredients. It is approved by the EPA, and as an added bonus, smells a little like lime jello. It is available at most national retailers for around $3-4.00.

OXO Squeegee: ( I had to google how to spell squeegee) This was another wedding gift and I use it every week. Great for getting mirrors and windows streak-free. I also have used it on fiberglass showers. Comes with a suction-cup hanger for use in the shower and the design is great. Found at Bed, Bath, and Beyond or Target.

And of course...the big daddy of all cleaning miracles...the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser: Gets almost ANYTHING clean. Takes the grime off my refrigerator handle, markers off my wall, and the stains off my solid surface cook top. Personally I like the original better than the DUO with the pointless sponge part. I use this everywhere from the Kitchen, the front porch (it gets the little black fly-spots off my window sills) and even the bathroom.

So now that you have indulged me in this little Ode to Spring Cleaning...what are some of your Spring Rites of Passage?

I think it’s great that you’re talking about green cleaning products. It’s so important that we get all the toxic chemicals out of our houses. There’s a great summary of what toxins are in “traditional” home cleaners at the Very Healthy Life website. Pretty scary stuff! And if you ever run need any more Basic-H, you can order it from our Shaklee site.
